Steelers linebacker TJ Watt was named yesterday the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance Sunday night against the Seahawks. He had seven tackles, two sacks, three passes defended, and a forced fumble in overtime that led to the game-winning field goal by Chris Boswell. It’s the fourth time Watt has won the honor.
The Steelers’ wide receiver corps has struggled with injuries that have limited their effectiveness all season long. Receivers coach Ike Hilliard said yesterday that it’s been a challenge finding healthy bodies, and it’s even tougher now that JuJu Smith-Schuster is out for the season after having shoulder surgery.
The Steelers have practiced the last two days but will get some time off now with the bye week in effect. Their next game is October 31st at Cleveland.
The Browns play tonight against the Broncos. Cleveland announced yesterday that quarterback Baker Mayfield will sit it out because of his left shoulder injury. Their top two running backs, Nick Chubb and Karim Hunt, are also out.
PITT PANTHERS IN THE NFL
A couple of former Pitt Panthers made it onto NFL rosters yesterday. Rookie center Jimmy Morrissey was plucked off the Raiders practice squad and signed by the Houston Texans yesterday. He was the Raiders’ seventh-round draft choice this year.
Kicker Chris Blewitt, who has been with several teams but never played in an NFL game, was signed to the Washington practice squad after a tryout this week and added to the active roster yesterday after the team cut veteran Dustin Hopkins.
