For the first time since undergoing knee surgery in June, Evgeni Malkin laced up a pair of skates and took to the ice yesterday at the Penguins’ training site in Cranberry.
Coach Mike Sullivan says it was great to see Geno skating again.
The Penguins take on the Dallas Stars tonight on Mike Lange Night at PPG Paints Arena. They’ll honor their retired play-by-play man and give each fan a sign with one of Lange’s trademark sayings.
Sullivan ruled out Sidney Crosby for tonight’s game and said forward Bryan Rust will be “week to week” with his lower body injury suffered last Thursday against Florida. Defenseman Mark Friedman left practice yesterday with an apparent lower body injury.

Zach Aston-Reese made his season debut on Saturday after missing the first two games due to covid-19. He is still working his way back into top shape after coming to camp as fit as he has ever been. Sullivan says Aston-Reese is an important part of the Penguins offense, even though he is best known for this defense. The coach thinks he could even be a fifteen-to-twenty goal scorer.
Yesterday, Mike Matheson worked with Chad Ruhwedel as a defensive pairing. Matheson has missed the first three games of the season with an undisclosed lower body injury that has been plaguing him for quite a while, and flared up just before last week’s opener against Tampa Bay.

The NHL is suspending Sharks forward Evander Kane for 21 games. Kane had violated the league’s COVID-19 protocol for allegedly submitting a fake vaccination card. Kane is suspended without pay, and will not be eligible to return to the team until November 30th.
