The Steelers wrapped up their three-day rookie minicamp yesterday and they announced the signing of six-year veteran cornerback Anthony Averett, who was in camp on a tryout invitation. Averett has played in 51 games for the Ravens and Raiders and made 27 NFL starts. He was with the 49ers and Lions last season but did not play in any games.
Coach Mike Tomlin said after Saturday’s workout that he was happy to get a look at his new guys.
Tomlin appreciated being able to become more familiar with first round draft choice Troy Fautanu.
The coach says there are certain things he wants to see early in the process of getting to know his younger players.
With the signings of all but the top two draft picks over the weekend, the Steelers’ front office will continue to work on deals for Fautanu and second rounder Zach Frazier, who will be key players on the Steelers offensive line.
Next up on the offseason workout schedule for the Steelers is the Organized Team Activities (OTAs), which will be May 21st through the 23rd, 28th through the 30th, and June 3rd through the 6th. Mandatory minicamp will be June 11th through the 13th.
