The Penguins scored four goals in the first period and chased Marc Andre Fleury from the Chicago net in a 5-2 win over the Blackhawks in the Pens’ home opener.
Teddy Bleuger scored only 15 seconds in the game on a 2-on-1 break, with the puck caroming off a defenseman’s skate blade past Fleury. Later in the period, Drew O’Connor scored his first NHL goal off a clearing mistake by Fleury. Then Danton Heinen and Brock McGinn scored on the helpless Fleury, whose teammates failed to give him a chance in goal. Jason Zucker scored later in the game for the Penguins. Tristan Jarry made only 18 saves on the night as the Penguins’ defense shut down the Blackhawks’ attack.
Coach Mike Sullivan passed Dan Bylsma for the most regular season wins in the franchise’s history.
Winger Bryan Rust was placed on injured reserve before the game with an undisclosed injury after taking a violent open-ice hit on Thursday night against Florida.
