Ricardo Aponte beat out a potential double play ball, allowing Davin Landers to score from third base in the bottom of the 9th for a 6-5 walkoff IUP win in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament. The win in the single elimination round puts IUP into the double-elimination bracket, where the Crimson Hawks will play East Stroudsburg, which outslugged host Slippery Rock, 16-10.
Harrison Pontoli had three hits for IUP and Peyton Johnson had two. Saltsburg grad Brady Yard doubled in a run for IUP. Mark Edeburn threw six innings and gave up four runs while Derrick Shields gave up one run over the final three innings and earned the win.
In the other games, West Chester outlasted Mercyhurst, 8-7 in 15 innings. Shippensburg upset top-seeded Seton Hill, 5-3.
IUP/East Stroudsburg will be played today at 10 AM, with the winner to play tomorrow against the winner between West Chester and Shippensburg. The losers of today’s early games will play at 5 o’clock this afternoon.
IUP is sixth in the latest Atlantic Region rankings, released yesterday. The PSAC dominates the top nine, with seven slots. West Chester is number one, followed by Millersville, East Stroud, Seton Hill, Charleston, IUP, Frostburg State, Slippery Rock, and Shippensburg.
