Presented with one last chance to sweep a series in 2021, the Pirates failed to do it, falling to the Reds, 6-3, in the last game of the season.
With a 61-101 record, the Pirates finish in last place in the NL Central Division again – the third time in a row – and end the season 0-for-16 when they had a chance to sweep a series. Only three other teams – Arizona, Baltimore, and Texas – had worse records than Pittsburgh.
The highlight of the game came in the 9th inning, when Oneil Cruz hit his first home run in the big leagues in his second game ever. After hitting 14 home runs for Altoona, Cruz hit five for Indianapolis in his brief stint there, and with his homer yesterday, he ended up hitting 20 on the season despite missing a significant amount of time in mid-summer with a forearm strain.
