IUP’s women’s tennis team had a good day yesterday at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships at Millersville, with two players advancing to the championship singles semifinals and two doubles teams moving on to the championship match.
It will be an all-IUP doubles championship this morning at 9 o’clock when Karolin Kirchtag and Katy Graydon take on teammates Natasha Munday and Joanna Stralka.
The 4th-seeded Munday and Stralka took out the Charleston pairing yesterday, 8-2 in the quarters, and then eliminated the top seeded Slippery Rock team, 8-5 in the semis. Kirchtag and Graydon downed their Charleston opponents 8-1 in the quarters, and their IUP teammates, Idoia Huerta and Lydia Vlachou, in the semis by a score of 9-7.
In singles, Kirchtag defeated two Charleston players in the quarters and semis, both in straight sets, and Graydon knocked off a Slippery Rock player and a Charleston player, both in straight sets. Stralka was forced to retire in her quarterfinal match due to injury.
Singles semis start today at 10:30 AM and the final is scheduled for 1.
