The Pirates’ Aroldis Chapman melted down in the 8th inning last night as the Bucs dropped the first game of a three-game series against the Mets in New York. Joe Block recaps a bad Bucco loss.
Manager Derek Shelton says starter Martín Perez was good through five innings, but after the 3-run top of the 6th, he lost his edge in the bottom of the inning.
Shelton says the ejection of Aroldis Chapman wasn’t hard to figure out.
Game two of the series is tonight in New York. Pirates rookie righthander Jared Jones [1-2, 4.00 ERA] faces former Bucs lefthander Jose Quintana [1-1, 3.45 ERA]. It’s a 6:45 airtime, 7:10 first pitch on WCCS.
It was all quiet on the minor league front yesterday with none of the Pirates’ farm teams playing. Altoona opens a six-game series at Bowie tonight with Po-Yu Chen on the mound for the Curve.
