On a day when Andrew McCutchen hit a historic home run, it was a blast by Jack Suwinski that made the difference for the Pirates.
Greg Brown recaps a Bucco win in Philadelphia.
If you missed the call of McCutchen’s 300th home run, here’s how it sounded on WCCS.
The Pirates move on to New York to face the Mets tonight. Lefty Martín Perez [1-0, 1.89 ERA] makes his fourth start, taking on Mets righthander Adrian House [0-1, 5.40 ERA]. It’s a 6:45 airtime, 7:10 first pitch on WCCS.
Not all of the news was good for the Pirates yesterday. A day after throwing 62 pitches in six innings against the Phils, lefthander Marco Gonzales turned up lame, with an inflamed left forearm. He had a similar injury last year while pitching for Seattle and had to have season-ending surgery after making just ten starts. The Pirates put him on the 15-day injured list and recalled relief pitcher Ryder Ryan, with another move anticipated later this week when the Pirates need a starter to replace Gonzales in the rotation.
On The Ben Cherington Show on WCCS yesterday, the Pirates general manager talked about the moves the Pirates will consider. He said Gonzales will be evaluated in Pittsburgh to determine the extent of his injury.
Cherington said the Pirates have options already on the Major League roster, such as Luis Ortiz, and they also have minor league pitchers they could call up, but maybe not who you think. 2019 first-round pick Quinn Priester might be the guy. He’s pitched well and has built up his arm at Indianapolis.
Paul Skenes will apparently not be considered because his pitch count is not built up yet as the Pirates stick with their planned progression for last year’s top draft pick.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona’s pitching stumbled yesterday in a 10-2 loss to Harrisburg. Anthony Solometo started and allowed three runs over three innings of work. The bullpen surrendered seven runs in the final three innings. Tres Gonzalez doubled and tripled for the Curve and Seth Beer and Brenden Dixon each singled twice. The Curve are off today and will open a six-game series at Bowie tomorrow night.
