Matraca Lynn Vrana, 28, who is accused of shooting to death her boyfriend at a Burrell Township apartment on Friday, has a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 20th before District Judge Christopher Welch.
Vrana was taken into custody yesterday and arraigned by Welch on four felony charges: criminal homicide, voluntary manslaughter (with a notation of provocation from the victim), aggravated assault, and discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.
State police were summoned to the apartment at 50 Barnview Circle at about 8 o’clock Friday night. There, they learned that the victim, a 27-year-old Blairsville man, had already been taken to IRMC with a gunshot wound to the head, and had died there. Police say Vrana fired the shot from a rifle during a domestic incident.
The victim’s name has not been released. Dr. Cyril Wecht performed an autopsy yesterday.
Vrana has a recent criminal history in both Indiana and Westmoreland counties, including most recently a case in which she was accused of trying to help her then-boyfriend smuggle drugs into the Westmoreland County Prison, where he was an inmate; and an Indiana County case in which she pleaded guilty to drug possession. She’d been present in a hotel in Burrell Township when her boyfriend and another man struggled over a gun during a drug deal and the gun had fired, grazing her boyfriend.
