With the start of training camp just days away, the Penguins announced yesterday that team captain Sidney Crosby will be out at least six weeks because of left wrist surgery. Crosby has been dealing with the injury for several years and had arthroscopic surgery on it last August.
General Manager Ron Hextall said yesterday that Crosby and the team were hoping the injury would heal over the summer, but they couldn’t wait any longer.
Hextall says the Penguins have time to adjust to the absences of Crosby and fellow center Evgeni Malkin, who is recovering from major knee surgery and will also miss the start of the season.
Hextall says the absences of Crosby and Malkin mean there is opportunity for other players to make an impact.
The GM says the Penguins will need to find ways to win without Crosby and Malkin.
Hextall says the Penguins still have plenty of weapons, even without Crosby and Malkin.
The Penguins open the season October 12th at two-time defending Stanley Cup winner Tampa Bay. Should Crosby return in six weeks, he would be back around October 20th. The Pens play Dallas on the 19th and the Maple Leafs on the 23rd, both at PPG Paints Arena.
