Steelers coach Mike Tomlin held his first in-season news conference yesterday, focusing on the Buffalo Bills, TJ Watt, and at the beginning, his long friendship and admiration for the late Tunch Ilkin, whose funeral service was yesterday.
Tomlin says stopping Bills quarterback Josh Allen is not going to be easy.
Tomlin says he expects TJ Watt to be a full participant in practice today, new contract or not. Nonetheless, he says his attention has been on the guys who are practicing with the team, not on Watt, who has sat out of team practices in training camp while negotiations have been held on a new contract for the star linebacker.
Tomlin says he expects everyone on the active roster to be available for Sunday, with no injury concerns. The coach also said he believes cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon will be able to pick up the Steelers’ system and be capable of playing Sunday, but he stopped short of saying that Witherspoon would be active for the game.

Former Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell is now a member of the Baltimore Ravens. Bell was signed to the Ravens’ practice squad yesterday, with a move to the active roster imminent. Baltimore has lost starting running back J.K. Dobbins to a torn ACL in his knee and backup Justice Hill to a torn Achilles heel.
The new name for the Washington Football Team is down to three candidates, but we don’t know yet what they are. The eight finalists are Presidents, Commanders, Defenders, Football Team, Armada, Brigade, Red Hogs and Red Wolves.
Sam “Bam” Cunningham passed away yesterday at the age of 71. The death of the former USC and New England Patriots fullback was announced by his alma mater.
