After the Pirates’ bullpen failed to hold a 3-0 lead, Oneil Cruz cracked a game-winning single to right field in the 11th inning to score placed runner Henry Davis and give the Bucs a 5-4 win.
Bailey Falter left the game after six shutout one-hit innings, only to see Ryder Ryan give up two runs in the 7th and David Bednar blow a save by giving up a run in the 9th. It was Bednar’s second blown save. Each team scored a run in the 10th and the Pirates loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th but failed to push across a game-winning run.
In his first start with the Pirates, Joey Bart homered and singled in his first two at-bats. Rowdy Tellez had three hits for the Bucs and Cruz and Bart each had two.
The series concludes this afternoon with Marco Gonzalez on the mound for the Pirates. The Ben Cherington Show leads off our Pirates coverage at 12:35 on WCCS.
