ROSTER CUTS DUE TODAY FOR NFL TEAMS

Mike Tomlin called it a good day of work, but the Steelers’ players might have a few bruises after a large fight broke out during practice.

The scrap, which included many players, began with a verbal altercation between safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and wide receiver Chase Claypool, which turned physical and then led to other players joining in. Tomlin refused to acknowledge the fight in his media session.

Today is cutdown day for the NFL. Rosters must be trimmed to 53, the regular season limit. After reportedly releasing four players yesterday, the Steelers have to reduce their roster by 14 more.

Multiple sources report the Steelers yesterday notified punter Jordan Berry that he will be released, meaning seventh-round draft pick Pressley Harvin III has made the team. Veteran long snapper Kameron Canaday was also released, along with linebacker Jamar Watson and wide receiver Rico Bussey, who was an early training camp sensation.

Tomlin says it is a tough day for everyone, some of whom are players who will never play football again.

Left tackle Zach Banner might not be ready to go in the Steelers’ first game at Buffalo on September 12^th, and the coaches addressed that possibility yesterday by switching Chuks Okorafor from the left side to the right – where he played last season – and inserting rookie Dan Moore on the left side. Tomlin said all of the linemen except for Banner are versatile enough to play multiple positions, and he downplayed the significance of the switch.

Working opposite the offensive line is what Tomlin sees as an improving unit-the defensive line, which despite the absence of end Stephon Tuitt has been disruptive through the exhibition season. The coach likes the mix of youth and experience.
