Mitch Keller got rocked for four runs in the second inning and the Pirates lost for the first time this season, 5-3 to the Nationals on a cold Wednesday night in Washington DC.
Keller gave up four runs, all earned, in five-and-a-third innings. Extra-base hits were his big problem. He allowed a home run to Joey Gallo in the second and he also surrendered five doubles, three of them to Luis Garcia Jr.
The Pirates’ batters couldn’t catch up to former Bucco right-hander Trevor Williams, who also pitched five-and-a-third innings, but gave up only two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out five. The Pirates struck out 13 times in the game and managed only four hits, including a double and a home run by Jack Suwinski.
Manager Derek Shelton says it was a rough outing.
Mitch Keller thought he pitched well, except for that bad second inning.
Jack Suwinski says Trevor Williams knows his stuff on the mound.
As expected, the Pirates put catcher Jason Delay on the 10-day injured list with inflammation of the right knee. The move allowed them to add newly-acquired catcher Joey Bart to the roster. They still have a depth problem at catcher, though, with Yasmani Grandal still unavailable due to plantar fasciitis and Ali Sanchez exercising his option to choose free agency rather than accept an assignment to Indianapolis.
Martín Perez pitches for the Pirates today in the series finale against the Nats’ Josiah Gray. The pregame airs at 3:40 with first pitch at 4:05 on WCCS.
