The Steelers opened their practice week at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, their South Side training facility, with some players missing from action. TJ Watt and Stephon Tuitt were absent, Watt doing his own workouts while negotiations on a new contract continue. Tuitt was not seen at the workout. All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick also watched from the sidelines, with coach Mike Tomlin saying only that “he’s fine.” Backup cornerback Arthur Maulet is day-to-day with an ankle injury suffered Saturday night against Detroit.
Receiver Chase Claypool returned from his ankle injury, which was suffered in practice last week.
Tomlin said he is not focused on getting veterans onto the playing field this week to avoid getting rusty with two weeks before the regular season starts. He said planning ahead for Carolina is all he’s working on right now.
Asked about the secondary and who will get a chance to show their stuff Friday night at Carolina, Tomlin said, “We’re still squirreling those nuts.”
