Hawaii and California were big winners on the first day of the Little League World Series in Williamsport.
The Honolulu Little League beat Connecticut 9-1 in their opener, while Torrance Little League from southern California knocked off New Hampshire, 10-2.
Ohio and Nebraska also won their first games to remain in the winners bracket.
The 16-team field consists of all U.S.-based teams for the first time since 1975 due to the pandemic. One of those teams is Toms River East Little League.
The team from Jersey City is back and led by Carson Frazier, nephew of two-time MLB All-Star and former Pirate Todd Frazier, who helped lead Toms River to the Little League World Series title as a 12-year-old back in 1998.
The “Jersey Boys” will be playing in one of the four games on tap Friday in Williamsport.
