The Somerset Patriots spoiled the Curve’s homecoming last night at PNG Field, beating them 9-1, and outhitting them 16-to-7.
The Patriots scored three runs in the first inning off a home run by Oswald Peraza, a single by Dermis Garcia and a botched strikeout. Somerset would add the final six runs throughout the remaining innings, granting Altoona just one opportunity to score in the bottom of the eighth after Mason Martin singled in Matthew Fraizer.
Speaking of Fraizer, he may not appear on the MLB Pipeline Top 100 prospects list for the Pirates, but he might find his way on the list soon. He went 2-for-5 in last night’s game against Somerset, marking his sixth multi-hit game in Altoona.
In addition, he’s hitting .372 with the Curve along with a 1.014 OPS.
The Curve look for redemption against the Patriots tonight at PNG Field. Righty Jeff Passantino (1-6, 4.58 ERA) will start for Altoona. Somerset hasn’t named a starter yet.
First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
Shortstop Oneil Cruz is “really, really close” to a return, according to Curve manager Miguel Perez. He also said right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras is close, but Cruz is closer to return.
Both have been on the injured list with right forearm strains. Cruz has been out of action since July 6, but resumed hitting activities last week. Contreras exited a rain-shortened start on June 30 and has thrown off a slope following side progression workouts.
