The Steelers were back at practice over the weekend after Thursday’s preseason win over Dallas, and presumed starting guard Kevin Dotson finally got onto the practice field, albeit with the second team. Coach Mike Tomlin said Dotson will have to earn his way into a starting role after missing almost all of camp with an undisclosed injury.
Wide receiver James Washington left practice and later was seen wearing a bandage on his right knee. Other sitting out yesterday included receivers Ray-Ray McCloud and Cody White, running back Kalen Ballage, cornerback Antoine Brooks, Jr., and defensive end Calvin Taylor. Defensive end Stephon Tuitt and linebacker TJ Watt remained sidelined, as they have been since the start of camp, and running back Benny Snell worked out on his own in the end zone.
With Snell and Ballage out, the Steelers signed free agent former Monmouth running back Pete Guerriero.
Tomlin says the preparation for Thursday’s game at Philadelphia will begin to ramp up as game-night approaches.
Tomlin says the preseason games are a valuable part of training camp because they offer a different perspective on players than practices do.
Former Steelers guard Alan Faneca and superscout Bill Nunn joined six others as the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s newest members Sunday, capping off an unprecedented weekend which also included the inductions Saturday of Troy Polamalu, Bill Cowher, and Donnie Shell. Sunday’s honorees also included former Colts and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, former Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, ex-Tampa Bay and Denver safety John Lynch, former Raiders and Packers cornerback Charles Woodson, one-time Cowboys wide receiver Drew Pearson, and former Raiders and Seahawks coach Tom Flores.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Legendary college football coach Bobby Bowden died yesterday at age 91. He revealed last month that he’d been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Bowden coached Florida State for 34 years and was the second winningest coach in Division I history with 357 wins and two national championships. He also coached his alma mater, Samford, which was known at the time as Howard College, and at West Virginia.
