Pitt’s basketball season is over after the Panthers failed to secure an NCAA Tournament bid and then turned down an invitation to play in the NIT Tournament.
Pitt closes the year at 22-11, with a fourth-place finish in the ACC and a semifinal appearance in the conference tournament, but ultimately it was regular season losses to underwhelming opponents such as Syracuse (twice), Miami, and Missouri that spelled their doom.
ESPN’s Jay Bilas called Pitt the snubbed team that most deserved to be in the tournament, but with so many top conference seeds across college basketball getting beat and teams with lesser accomplishments than Pitt getting into the tournament, there was no room for the Panthers.
While Pitt is out, Duquesne is in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 47 years. The 24-11 Dukes are the champions of the Atlantic Ten tournament after a 57-51 win over VCU yesterday.
Duquesne is the 11th seed in the East Region and will play number 6 BYU on Thursday in Omaha, Nebraska.
