The Penguins took a 1-0 lead on an early goal by Jon Ludvig, but they soon found themselves down, 2-1 as the Rangers left the Pens’ defense floundering on the way to a 7-4 New York win.
The Rangers answered Ludvig’s goal 33 seconds later with a goal by Kaapo Kakko, and less than a minute after that, Adam Fox scored for New York. Later in the period, the Pen tied the game on Bryan Rust’s 20th goal of the season, but New York again took the lead on a goal by Artemi Panara.
At 10:10 of the second period, the Penguins’ Lars Eller scored to tie the game at 3, but again New York struck back quickly, with goals on consecutive power plays by Panarin and Mika Zibanejad. They made it into a three-goal lead in the third period when K’Andre Miller scored.
The Pens’ Valtteri Puustinen scored to make it 6-4, but Chris Kreider capped the scoring with an empty-net goal for New York to set the final at 7-4.
The Penguins play Detroit today at PPG Paints Arena.
