For the eighth time this season, the Pirates were going for a series sweep as they faced the Phillies yesterday. They are 0-for-8.
Joe Block has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton says a lot of pitchers will be getting opportunities for the Pirates between now and the end of the season.
Shelton says the Pirates would really like to get a series sweep, after failing to do so on eight tries.
Injured Pirates Colin Moran and Erik Gonzalez both made rehab starts for Indianapolis yesterday. Moran played first base and hit a three-run home run. Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a run driven in.
The Pirates begin a series against first-place Milwaukee tonight. The Brewers swept the Bucs in Pittsburgh last week. Newly-acquired pitcher Bryse Wilson, who came from Atlanta Friday in the Richard Rodriguez trade, gets the start for the the Pirates. He was 2-3 for the Braves with a 4.83 ERA in seven starts as he split time between the Majors and Triple-A. The Brewers will start Eric Lauer (3-4, 3.78 ERA). He pitched three innings against the Pirates last Wednesday out of the bullpen, giving up one run on two hits and walking two.
MLB One of the Pirates’ options this year for the first overall choice in the MLB draft was Vanderbilt pitcher Kumar Rocker, who at this time last year was the overwhelming favorite for the top spot. The Bucs instead chose Louisville catcher Henry Davis, and Rocker fell in the draft all the way to number ten. Now the team which picked him, the New York Mets, say they will not attempt to sign him after agreeing to a $6 million contract. The Mets did not like the results of medical tests on Rocker’s pitching arm. Rocker could end up returning for another season at Vanderbilt. His agent, Scott Boras, says Rocker’s arm is fine. The Mets will receive the 11th overall choice in next year’s draft as compensation for not signing Rocker.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona lost to Harrisburg, 8-7. The Curve won the first three games of the series, but the pitching fell apart and they lost the next three. Brendt Citta was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. Cal Mitchell was 2-for-5.
After an off day today, the Curve will start a series at Akron tomorrow night.
