Indiana County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate went down in the month of January.
The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry reported that Indiana County’s unemployment rate dropped nearly a full percentage point from December of 2023 to January of this year, eventually landing at 3.5 percent. It is a 1.2 percentage point drop from last year at this time. Comparing Indiana to the surrounding counties, Westmoreland and Clearfield counties had 3.0 percent unemployment. Armstrong checked in with 3.2 percent, while Jefferson had 3.3 percent. Cambria County was highest in the region at 4.0 percent.
Across the state, the highest unemployment rate was in Monroe County at 4.4 percent, while the lowest was Fulton County at 2.0 percent.
The total number of non-farm jobs in Indiana County was down by 1700 jobs to 28,300 in January. Jobs were down in five of the nine published industry super sectors, with the largest decreases seen as seasonal in nature. Government jobs were down by 1000 due to the winter break, while hospitality dipped by 300 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilities dropped by 200 jobs.
