A church in Center Township is getting ready to celebrate its 175th anniversary this weekend.
Luther Chapel in Coral, part of the Northwestern PA Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will hold its anniversary celebration on Saturday and Sunday. Church Treasurer Sarah Shaffer said that on Saturday, there will be an open house from 1-4, and as a part of that, there will be a dedication of a new bench.

“Arkie,” whose real name was The Reverend Vaughn Taylor, was a longtime member of the Luther Chapel congregation, which now numbers around 60. He was then brought into the Lutheran Ministry and was a graduate of Thiel College in 1961. He had served as a pastor in Indiana, Armstrong, Jefferson and Beaver counties in Pennsylvania and in Garrett County in Maryland before passing away at IRMC in April of 2020 at the age of 82.
On Sunday, there will be a special service where members of their sister church, Zion Lutheran in Indiana, will join them at 11:15 AM. That will be followed by a luncheon, and an organ performance and hymn sing at 3:00.
