Playing a lineup of mostly backups and players trying to make the team, the Pirates managed only five hits and lost to the Red Sox yesterday, 1-0.
Starter Bailey Falter had a good outing for the Pirates, throwing 3-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless ball, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out four. Former Seattle Mariner Ryder Ryan, who is in camp on a minor league contract, gave up the Sox’ run in the seventh inning on a walk, a double, and a groundout.
Another top Pirates pitching prospect was sent to the minor league camp yesterday. Right-hander Braxton Ashcraft has made four appearances this spring and allowed two unearned runs and no earned runs on two hits and two walks, hitting a batter and striking out three.
The Pirates play the Braves today in Bradenton with Chase Anderson starting the game on the mound. We’re on the air on WCCS at one o’clock.
