The Pirates were off yesterday but the front office was active.
With the Major League trade deadline approaching on Saturday, General Manager Ben Cherington pulled off a trade, sending relief pitcher Clay Holmes to the Yankees for two minor leaguers. In return for Holmes, the Pirates get 25-year-old Triple-A infielder Hoy Jun Park and 23-year-old Double-A infielder Diego Castillo.
Park is a left-handed batter who began this season in Double-A but was promoted to Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, where in 48 games he hit .327 and led the East League in average, on-base percentage, OPS, and walks. In the minors this year, Park has a combined 11 homers and 32 RBI.
Castillo played for Somerset against the Altoona Curve last week. He is hitting .277 and like Park, also has 11 homers and 32 RBI.
Holmes was the Pirates’ ninth-round draft choice in 2011. This season, he was 3-2 in 44 appearances out of the Bucs’ bullpen with a 4.93 ERA, 44 strikeouts and 25 walks in 42 innings pitched.

Outfielder Lonnie White Jr. signed a $1.5 million contract with the Pirates yesterday, forgoing a college football career at Penn State, where he was a four-star recruit at wide receiver.
