The NFL’s “legal tampering period” begins at noon today, when teams can negotiate with pending free agents before the start of the league year at 4 PM on Wednesday. Those players can agree to contracts but cannot sign them until Wednesday.
Some players can actually negotiate ahead of the legal tampering period, including those who have been released or granted permission by their teams to open contract talks with other teams. On his X account, Denver quarterback Russell Wilson has revealed that he will sign with the Steelers, posting a 50-second video with the song “Renegade” in the background, images of Steelers fans waving Terrible Towels, and the words, “Year 13. Grateful.”
Wilson will sign a one-year deal with the Steelers for the veteran minimum salary of $1.2 million, with the Broncos continuing to pay the rest of his guaranteed $38 million due this year.
Wilson will compete with Kenny Pickett for the starting quarterback job. He played ten years for Seattle, making the Pro Bowl nine times. In his second season with the Broncos last year, he started the first 15 games and threw 26 touchdown passes and eight interceptions before being benched. He was 11-19 in two years at Denver.
The Steelers will have fourteen unrestricted free agents who could either re-sign with them or go elsewhere. They include quarterback Mason Rudolph, Pro Bowl special teamer Miles Killebrew, inside linebacker Kwon Alexander, cornerback Levi Wallace, and defensive lineman Montravius Adams. Teams can re-sign their own free agents during the legal tampering period.
