The American Red Cross is reminding everyone that when they change their clocks this weekend for Daylight Saving Time, smoke detectors should also be checked as well.
Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the house, including inside and outside of bedrooms and other sleeping areas. Alarms should be tested this weekend and batteries should be replaced as necessary. The Red Cross also suggests that any smoke alarms that are older than 10 years should be replaced as sensors can become less sensitive over time.
Working smoke alarms should be a part of a plan to prevent serious injury or death in case the worst happens. In many cases, people in houses on fire have less than two minutes to escape, and the sooner they are notified by a smoke alarm, the better their chances of getting out.
