Sophomore guard Carolyn Appleby hit a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists, as IUP defeated Mercyhurst, 78-61, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday nights at the Kovalchick Complex.
Sophomore Brittany Robinson scored 14 points to go with seven rebounds. Junior Megan Smith and redshirt sophomore Lauren Wolosik each scored 11 points.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 21-6 overall and will travel to face the East’s top seed and host Shippensburg in the semifinals.
In the men’s game, the No. 2 ranked Crimson Hawks defeated Mercyhurst, 69-53, in the quarterfinals at the Kovalchick Complex.
The Crimson Hawks extended their winning streak to 18 games and improved to 27-2 on the season. IUP, as the top remaining seed in the PSAC West, will host this weekend’s PSAC semifinals and finals and will play Shippensburg in the semifinals.
Sophomore Jacobo Diaz scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sophomore Dante Lombardi led all scorers with 20 points.
