The Pirates won their second straight game in Spring Training yesterday in Bradenton. Here’s Joe Block.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington has told top prospect Paul Skenes he will not make the team out of spring training. But will remain in Big League camp. Skenes has given up one run in three innings of work over two Grapefruit League games this spring.
Manager Derek Shelton says Skenes has thrown less than seven innings of pro baseball, so they want him to start in the minors, but they also want him in the Pirates clubhouse this spring so he can be around the Bucs’ veterans.
Andrew McCutchen made his spring debut and was 1-for-2 with a single. He’s coming back from a partially torn left Achilles tendon and working slowly back into the lineup. Cutch says he’s enjoying the routine of Spring Training.
The Pirates visit the Orioles in Sarasota tonight for a six o’clock game. Mitch Keller will make his second start of the spring.
