The Pirates blasted three home runs yesterday in a 7-3 Grapefruit League win over Tampa Bay. Jack Suwinski hit his first homer of the spring and so did Canaan Smith-Njigba, while Henry Davis clubbed his third.
Luis Ortiz started and threw three innings, giving up an unearned run. He allowed only one hit and a walk and struck out the side in the first inning. Ortiz was relieved by Paul Skenes, who gave up a leadoff home run to Amed Rosario on a 100-mile-per-hour fastball in the fourth. He tossed two innings, giving up one run and three hits while striking out three.
The Pirates’ first cuts of the spring yesterday included Top Ten prospects Bubba Chandler, Anthony Solometo, Thomas Harrington, and Jackson Wolf, all of whom are pitchers, and infielder Andres Alvarez. Wolf was assigned to Altoona while the other four were simply designated to minor league camp.
The Pirates play the Blue Jays today in Bradenton, airing on WCCS at 1 o’clock. Top Five prospect, righthander Jared Jones, gets the start.
