The Pirates have signed their top draft choice, number-one overall selection Henry Davis. The catcher appeared at a Sunday morning news conference and even got to take some batting practice at PNC Park before departing to begin his Bucco career in Bradenton.
General Manager Ben Cherington says Davis is exactly the type of player – and person – the Pirates need in their organization.
Davis says he is excited to be a Pirate.
Despite being the top overall pick in the draft, Davis signed an under-slot contract, agreeing to a $6.5 million bonus, which frees more than $1.9 million for the Bucs to sign other draft picks.
Davis was one of six draftees to sign over the weekend. Picks five through ten also signed. The Pirates 2-through-4 picks, pitchers Anthony Solometo, Bubba Chandler, and Owen Kellington, and outfielder Lonnie White Jr. still are not signed.
