The Penguins have traded winger Jared McCann to Toronto for forward Filip Hallander, a former second-round draft pick the Pens traded to the Maple Leafs last year as part of the Kasperi Kapanen deal. The Penguins also got a seventh round pick in the 2023 draft.
The move enables the Penguins to avoid losing McCann in the expansion draft, thus getting nothing in return for him. McCann scored 14 goals with 18 assists in 43 games with the Pens last season, but was held to only one assist in the first-round playoff elimination series against the Islanders.
Hallander, a minor leaguer, is not eligible for the draft. Hallander scored 13 goals and had 11 assists in 51 games in the Swedish Hockey league last year.
The Penguins got the trade completed before the roster freeze which took effect yesterday. They and the rest of the NHL teams (with the exception of Vegas) were required to submit their lists of unprotected players eligible to be drafted by the Seattle Kraken by 5 PM. The NHL will reveal the list today.
