Budget hearings continued in Harrisburg yesterday, with the Senate Appropriations Committee focusing its attention on the Department of Education, with Senate Republican Leadership saying that department officials struggled to answer questions about wide discrepancies in K-12 education funding along with topics concerning higher education.
One problem that Senate Republican Leader Joe Pittman said that needed to be addressed was the lack of students going to colleges and universities.
Some other basic education concerns that were brought up include projected funding increases. Senate leaders say that while Governor Shapiro has increased spending by nearly $1.1 billion in the 2024-25 proposed budget, it does not show increases in basic education funding after this year, which they believe means an increase in taxes for state residents.
Budget hearings continue today and into next week.
