Despite home runs by outfielders Jonah Davis and Canaan Smith-Njigba, and a strong outing by starter Trey McGough, the Rumble Ponies rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to comeback and beat the Altoona Curve, 4-3, Thursday night.
Davis led off the game with a solo home run against Binghamton starter Adam Oller – his seventh big fly of the year. Smith-Njigba would add two runs on his sixth homer in the third.
Curve pitchers held the Ponies in check throughout the majority of the game, but reliever John O’Reilly surrendered a pair of doubles in the eighth, which allowed Binghamton to gain the upper edge.
McGough had another quality outing for Altoona, surrendering just four hits and one earned run through seven innings of work. He also tallied four strikeouts and lowered his season ERA to 3.38.
Curve play-by-play announcer Jon Mozes said on Indiana in the Morning yesterday that McGough looks more comfortable each time he takes the hill.
The Curve and Rumble Ponies will duke it out again tonight at PNG Field. Osvaldo Bido is slated to pitch for Altoona. He’s 2-2 with a 4.30 ERA. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
