INDIANAPOLIS – Boasting a 23-2 overall record, IUP men’s basketball shows up at No. 3 as the NCAA released the season’s first Division II Regional Rankings on Wednesday afternoon.
It’s the first of three ranking releases prior to the announcement of the 64-team Division II playoff field on Sunday, March 5. The next release will be come on Wednesday, Feb. 22 before the final regular season ranking on March 1.
The top eight teams in each of Division II’s eight regions advance to the NCAA tournament. The Atlantic Region is made up of three conferences – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC), and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
Fairmont State (23-1) leads the pack with Shippensburg (19-2) following at No. 2. The Crimson Hawks’ only two losses of the year came back in December to these teams.
Following IUP in fourth is West Liberty (22-2), with Kutztown (19-2) in fifth, Wheeling Jesuit (18-5) in sixth, Virginia Union (21-4) in seventh, and Virginia State (18-4) in eighth.

The Crimson Hawks are looking for the program’s 30th all-time trip to the NCAA tournament. IUP made seven straight tournament trips under head coach Joe Lombardi from 2009-15.
IUP Women’s Basketball Ranked Fourth in Initial NCAA Regional Rankings

2015 Division II national champion California (23-1) is ranked first in the region, with Virginia Union (21-2) following in second, and Wheeling Jesuit (20-4) ahead of the Crimson Hawks (18-5) in third.
Behind IUP in fifth is Edinboro (18-6), followed by Shippensburg (20-5) in sixth, Mercyhurst (19-5) in seventh, and Glenville State (19-4) in eighth.

The Crimson Hawks are looking for their 10th NCAA tournament appearance in program history, including the program’s third straight under head coach Tom McConnell.
