On Tuesday night, Homer City Borough Council approved advertising a proposed burn ordinance.
According to the proposal, all burning in the borough would be banned with the exception of grills and campfires. Bonfires put on by groups would be approved on a case-by-case basis, as would burning other material than wood or paper. To burn other materials, citizens would need to get permission from the chief of police or the mayor, and buy a $10 permit.
Borough Council President Ken “Cal” Cecconi said that the ordinance was a long time coming, but it is something that the citizens have wanted.
The penalties in this ordinance will start with a warning for the first offense, then a $50 fine for a second offense, $100 for a third offense and fourth and subsequent offenses would result in $300 fines.
The ordinance will be up for final approval at the borough council meeting in August.
