Two counties that border Indiana County have been placed under a “Code Orange” Air Quality Action alert for today.
The alert comes from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and will be in effect for Armstrong and Westmoreland, along with five other nearby counties. The DEP said in a news release that the combination of mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 90s will likely contribute to eight-hour average concentrations of Ozone in the Code Orange range.
When an Air Quality Action Day is declared, those with respiratory problems along with young children and the elderly, may have problems breathing today. Those populations are asked to limit outdoor activities today.
Residents and businesses within the Air Quality Action Day region are asked to voluntarily reduce air pollution by running their cars less. Some suggestions include carpooling, using public transportation, combining errands and limiting engine idling. The DEP also suggests refueling cars and trucks after dusk and conserving electricity by turning up the A.C. to a higher temperature and turning off lights not in use.
