Patrick Hornqvist scored twice, Phil Kessel tallied, and Chris Kunitz added an empty netter to lead the Penguins to a 4-1 triumph over the leagues worst team, the Colorado Avalanche.
Gabriel Landeskog scored a power-play goal with 3 minutes and 16 seconds remaining in the game to spoil Matt Murray’s bid for a shutout. Murray stopped 27 of the Avs 28 shots.
With the victory, and the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-0 loss at home to the Vancouver Canucks, the Penguins moved into sole possession of second place in the NHL’s Metropolitan division.
