Pitt football coach Pat Narduzzi has been busy lately getting verbal commitments from recruits for the 2022 season, but yesterday he announced a late arrival to the 2021 class, a tight end from Frederick, Maryland, whose high school played spring football this year.
Cole Mitchell had planned to enroll at IMG Academy and work on his football skills in order to improve his college offers, but he took part in last weekend’s Pitt Rising Stars Camp and impressed the Panthers’ coaches so much they offered him a scholarship.
Mitchell is 6-5 and 235 pounds and he joins a crowded tight ends room with the Panthers. There are nine other tight ends on the Pitt roster, including former Indiana High quarterback Jake Zilinskas, who is taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility offered to last year’s seniors due to covid.
PITT BASKETBALL
Pitt has not yet finalized its basketball schedule for the upcoming season, but the Panthers will be a host team in this year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge. They will play Minnesota on November 30th at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt is 2-1 all-time against the Golden Gophers. The last time they played was in December of 1950 (Minnesota won, 72-43).
