After dedicating more than three decades to coaching high school basketball in Indiana County, Greg Lezanic has decided to hang up his whistle.
Lezanic announced his retirement a few days after the Indiana boys’ regular season wrapped up on Friday. He spent 31 total years coaching across Indiana County and lead teams in more than 700 games.
It started with the Penns Manor girls in October 1989. He spent nine years with the Comets and collected 117 wins before moving on to Purchase Line for one season.
After that and a three-year hiatus, Lezanic took over the Marion Center girls’ basketball team in 2002 and experienced nine successful seasons where he collected 170 wins and two PIAA District 6 championships in 2010 and 2011.
Lezanic took his talents to Indiana High in 2013 and quickly made an impact by securing the WPIAL Class 3A championship in the 2014-15 season at the Petersen Events Center, which earned him Class AAA Coach of the Year honors.
Five years later, Lezanic added to his milestones by eclipsing his 400th win in a 72-58 rout of Kennedy Catholic.
Lezanic reflected on the memorable moments in his career and said the WPIAL championship stands out among the rest.
Being around the game for so long as a player, coach, and athletic director, Lezanic said the game has changed in so many ways, especially the level of talent.
Lezanic plans to spend more time with his grandchildren, play golf, go on trips with his family, and spend time watching Indiana basketball games.
Indiana Area Athletic Director Dan Roan was thankful for Lezanic’s service to the district, even saying he set a good standard for coaching. He adds Lezanic always had a positive demeanor both on and off the court.
No word on who will fill the head coaching position at Indiana High. Roan says they will undergo a traditional application process.
An official announcement is expected to be released tomorrow.
