State police are advising people to be safe this 4th of July weekend, especially if they plan to drive.
Troop A of the state police, which covers Indiana, Cambria, Westmoreland and Somerset Counties, will be out in full force for the holiday driving period, which starts Wednesday, June 30th and runs through Sunday, July 4th. Last year, statistics for the 4th of July holiday were not kept due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but for 2019, State Police in the Troop A area made 1,789 traffic stops. They made 51 DUI arrests and investigated 43 crashes, with one of those being a fatal crash that killed one person, and another four were alcohol-related.
In that same time period, state police in the Troop A region wrote and 1,995 traffic citations, with 1,106 of them for speeding. They also issued 209 seatbelt violation warnings and 81 seatbelt citations. Another six were for Child Passenger Seat violations.
State police advise all motorists to be safe, buckle up and drive responsibly during Independence Day Weekend.
