The Penguins are still sitting outside the two NHL Eastern Conference Wild Card standings after two more losses over the weekend, and they are losing sight of the teams in front of them. The Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs hold the two Wild Card positions with 60 points. Then come the New York Islanders, with 56 points, and the New Jersey Devils, with 54. The Penguins are in the 11th position, with 53 points. They are also nine points behind Philadelphia for the third spot out of the Metro Division, which is also a playoff slot.
The Pens lost to Minnesota, 3-2 on Friday, and to Winnipeg on Saturday, 2-1.
Coach Mike Sullivan isn’t finding the offense he needs from a roster filled with plenty of star power.
Sullivan says the Penguins are not playing the kind of hockey it takes to win hockey games.
The Penguins will play the second-best team in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday when the Florida Panthers visit PPG Paints Arena. They’ve played the Panthers twice this season, losing 3-1 on December 8th and 3-2 in a shootout on January 26th.
