The IUP basketball teams hit the court again Wednesday night at the KCAC against UPJ after an exciting Saturday against Gannon.
The Crimson Hawks’ women nipped the second-ranked Gannon women, 53-52. Maria Cerro’s two free throws with 1:29 left to set up thrilling, adventure-filled final moments of the game, with the IUP defense holding off the Gannon offense in a nail-biter at the end.
Coach Craig Carey says the IUP women may not get a lot of respect in the region so far, but the win over Gannon shows what they can do.
The IUP men trailed by 20 points in the second half of their game against the eighth-ranked Gannon men but fought and tied the score late on a Garvin Clarke three-pointer before Gannon’s Derrick James hit two free throws with four seconds left to give them the win.
As exciting as it was, coach Joe Lombardi says IUP is not interested in so-called “moral victories”.
IUP’s Ethan Porterfield scored a career-high 31 points in the game to pass Bert Misenko for third place on the school’s all-time scoring list. With 1,736 points, he is 11 points behind Cobo Diaz and 213 points behind Darryl Webb.
The IUP women are 12-4 in the PSAC and in second place in the West behind Gannon, and a game up on Edinboro. Wednesday’s opponent, UPJ, is 9-8 and in seventh in the West. IUP’s men are 11-5 in the PSAC and are third in the West behind Gannon and Cal U. They are two games up on Slippery Rock. UPJ is 4-13 in the conference and are last in the West.
