Officials are asking those who will take part in Super Bowl parties this weekend to avoid drinking and driving.
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration says that there is a spike in the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities on days like Super Bowl Sunday. In 2021, there were 13,384 traffic deaths involving drunk driving across the nation.
PennDOT officials say that there will be more DUI and sobriety checkpoints this weekend. Representatives said the effort is not being done to penalize drivers and that law enforcement officers want to keep people safe.
Triple A says The best advice is to have a gameplan for your celebrations. If you are planning to drink, you are asked to designate a driver or use a ride-share or public transportation to get home. They also suggest that party hosts be responsible by taking the keys of someone who is intoxicated to prevent them driving impaired, and to have a list of rideshare and local cab companies and their phone numbers to provide a safe way home. And while people shouldn’t drive intoxicated, people shouldn’t drive hungover either.
