Today is the final day of the Indiana County NAACP Juneteenth celebration.
This year’s celebration is being held virtually over Zoom, and features a special closing ceremony with complimentary soul food dinners provided by Cravings by Matt. Tonight’s celebration will include a keynote speech from Jerika Richardson of the National Urban League on the 21 pillars for Redefining Public Safety and Community Trust, a performance by the David J. Hanson & Friends Band and the winners of several contests including T-shirt slogans and other contests that have been held throughout the four-day celebration.
Juneteenth celebrates the day in 1865 that union soldiers entered Galveston, Texas and proclaimed that slaves were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.
The event is free, but there is a limited number of soul food meals available. To join the event, log on to their Eventbrite page.
