Coaches at state-owned universities and the State System of Higher Education are still at an impasse on a new agreement after making headway this week.
APSCUF and PASSHE met Wednesday in a lengthy meeting that extended into the evening, and while both sides agreed on most topics, APSCUF executive leader for coaches John Gump said they were “far apart” on two recurring issues: job security and professional development.
Gump said in a news release that the System does not want to provide professional-development support to coaches, and some even begin their jobs being paid below the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines for a two-person household, yet they continue to be evaluated on professional development. He said it was “absurd that coaches should be expected to entirely foot the bill,” and that the “universities are setting people up for failure.”
Meanwhile, job security has been a recurring discussion in negotiations.
Both sides are scheduled to meet again later this month. Coaches continue to work under the terms of the old contract, which expired on June 30.
