On the first day of Steelers’ minicamp, defensive end Stephon Tuitt was the only no-show, as his family grieves the death of his brother. Guard David DeCastro did not practice, and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster appeared to suffer injuries, although coach Mike Tomlin refused to discuss it.
Tomlin said the minicamp is all about getting ready for training camp next month.
Tomlin was asked about second-year linebacker Alex Highsmith replacing Bud Dupree on the outside, teaming with TJ Watt to give the Steelers a potent outside rush.
Watt spoke about a number of topics, including his golf game, working with Highsmith, and his playing time, which averages about 85 percent of the defensive snaps over the course of his career.
Watt is due to make $10.089 million this year in the final year of his contract, but the Steelers are hoping to sign him to a mega-deal before the season starts. The All-Pro said he would not talk about his contract “with respect to the process” of contract negotiations.
