Mike Tomlin said after the 2023 season that he wanted to bring in an offensive coordinator with plenty of NFL experience, and after a handful of interviews, he has his guy in former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith.
The 41-year-old Smith comes to Pittsburgh following three consecutive 7-10 seasons as the Atlanta Falcons’ head coach, two of which saw them rank 26th in the NFL in point scored. Before that, he found success under Mike Vrabel as his play-caller in Tennessee, even helping them get to the AFC Championship game in 2019.
Smith was even viewed as one of the main reasons for the resurgence of veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who was named AP Comeback Player of the Year after posting career-highs in yards per attempt (9.6), yards per completion (13.6), and QB rating (117.5) in 2019. Tannehill also earned his first – and only – Pro Bowl honor under Smith.
One of Smith’s primary tasks will be working with Kenny Pickett, who is coming off a season that saw him injured and benched for backup Mason Rudolph.
