The PA Senate and House of Representatives unanimously passed legislature to end Gov. Tom Wolf’s emergency disaster declaration on Thursday.
The resolution not only looks to end the near 16-month emergency disaster declaration, in which Gov. Wolf enacted at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it extends regulatory waivers to keep Wolf’s actions suspended until Sept. 30.
Both Republicans and Democrats in the legislature disagreed over the legality of the resolution, citing that last month’s referendum votes that allows lawmakers to take authority in extending or ending emergency declarations were not yet certified, but despite the differing viewpoints, the resolution was approved by all Republicans and nine Democrats in the legislature.
Those who opposed the resolution cited a potential resurgence in COVID-19 across the state that could put PA at risk for losing millions of dollars in federal emergency food aid for low-income residents.
